Some of my modern Mexican notes have security features which means that they will not scan :( . It would good to see what has made it into your collection and whether you have had to deal with this and how??

Yes, my scanner became quite ill when I tried to scan the 2021, 50 pesos note.   Oddly enough it did not have any issues with the 2020, 100 pesos note. (shrug)

When the scanner fails me I take the best image I can get of the note using my camera, but more often than not the sellers images are superior and I go with those. I haven't research a way around the anti-scanning features yet.

They appear to have been stamped, or initialled/dated, as they were redeemed, I expect punch holes would have made the note increasing fragile over time. Having just ordered more self-adhesive printer labels I hadn't considered stickers - a quick google search suggests 1932 was the start point for such things - they could glue things like stamps though.hm

Here is an example of U.S. depression scrip from my collection and why "stickers" came to mind as an option, I don't know if the stamps were, gummed (lick-it-and-stick-it), self-adhesive, or if they were glued on, but this example being issued after 1932 ('33) seems to fall in line with '32 as being a starting point for their use. I would assume they were gummed, similar to a postage stamp, as that technology has been in use prior to 1932.

Sounds like interesting developments with the Ukraine currency - anyone taking bets on the first Million Hyrven note? xD

There are lots of Latin American notes of the same period with coupons attached or, as in the Brazilian example below - covering the entire back of the note!

They seem to have been very literal when naming many private banks e.g. the State or City, the major shareholder or the reason for establishing the bank in the first place, as a result I love it that this note was issued by the Coffee Bank :roflmao:

Interesting note, reminds me of some of the U.S. depression scrip issued by local cities. Did they punch each square, stamp, place a sticker when redeemed?

I have recently picked up some modern Mexican notes over the last month, but I haven't had the opportunity to post them yet. More later...

  4. Mm, mm, mm. Those are some great looking notes. I agree, I like the 1000 pesos very much. A real looker.

Besides local issues, government issues and contemporary counterfeits, were there "propaganda" notes circulating as well? Notes with derogatory overprint, caricatures, or "fantasy" notes? I'm thinking during the Revolution.

There have now been 168 2023, 20 Hryven Commemorative notes graded with no 70's, two 69's and twenty-nine 68's. One-hundred-sixty-eight is an astronomical amount for one type of Ukrainian note, surprisingly I haven't seen many for sale but I expect they will be sitting on sellers shelves for sometime as I doubt the demand is there. But maybe?

Obviously the 2023, 20 Hryven has finally hit the population report. lol Looks like there have been 90 submitted so far with only 12 at 68EPQ and 2 at 69EPQ, no 70's. Those aren't great numbers as grading %'s go and 90 is a big number, I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of sellers stuck with these and they'll have to unload them at fairly low prices.

I have a set of Onchan tokens some where - hadn't even considered notes xD

Yep, I have a couple 1d Onchan tokens, part of the reason I was thinking about the camp notes. Should probably finish with the tokens first though.

June was also big for me my first note of this set was graded personally in December of 2020, and after about 3 years of work on this set I now have the number 1 set in the category and I'm closing in on 50% completion. I am still on the lookout and have started acquiring notes for my next submission, maybe sometime next year. I think that realistically my goal for this set is 90% completion, I think that is a doable number for this set because after that there are about 10-15 notes where every note is easily 4 figures maybe 5.

Congrats on having the top set!

Czech notes have a pretty good collector base and a LOT of material with seemingly limited availability, even the modern stuff goes for multiples of other countries, it doesn't surprise me that there are that many "stoppers" in the set. Hopefully you'll get lucky and find some nice raw examples in the future.

This seller has had some fantastic specimen czech notes that have gone for really high values as well, some of them early on went for 2k+. I would have loved to get one but unfortunately they were way to far above my budget at this time. I don't know where they got all these specimen notes but they have had a lot of them.

I think they specialize in specimens, proofs, etc., I saw those Czech specimens and they were awesome! The seller also listed a ton of Yugoslavia, Georgian, and specimens from many other countries recently. It's been pretty amazing to see all these notes.

For the IoM, they don't seem to appear very often at auction here so I expect the earlier notes and the larger denominations will be a bit of a challenge - go for it

They are going to be more of a side project. I was thinking of starting with the Internment Camp notes, Noonans had a few for sale recently, either those or ease in with some moderns.

So, and this is completely in the realm of fantasy and guesswork, but for the older notes I guess Canadians have quietly been big collectors of world notes over the years and some long-standing collections are now appearing on the market???? hm Plus there doesn't seem to be many specialist Canadian auctions and that probably just leaves direct sale to a dealer for many people???

Wouldn't surprise me if this was accurate, there seems to be a very active banknote community in Canada. Ukrainian notes being sold through a Canadian dealer make some sense to me as there is a large population of Ukrainians living there, all the other notes. (shrug) Apparently they are well connected and stocked!

I like the note from the British Guiana Bank as, at first glance, it looks like an English note yet it is in dollars and not pounds meaning you have to look closer and actually read the text - or is that just me :roflmao:

Ah, yes it does. I hadn't noticed. I've been looking at some notes from the Isle of Man and they are somewhat similar. I haven't pulled the trigger on any IoM paper yet, there is a book on IoM notes by Pam West I've been waiting to pick that up before I start really looking at these notes.

Any idea how many 'color trials' etc would be produced for a new issue?

No clue, for some coupon's there are up to eight documented color trials, but taken at face the printer's annotation would suggest 3,691 for that particular note. Now, whether that means 3,691 of that note/color or if there are several color trials lumped in? (shrug) Then how many escaped and survived?

Assuming they are all in good condition and end up in holders would there be enough for all the Ukraine collectors out there?

Hard to say based on available info but it seems there is a shortage.

and the key question is 'how is the seller getting the ungraded notes and can I get some the same way????' :gossip:

I'd love to know the answer to this question! The seller seemingly has an inexhaustible supply of great material, especially specimens, and just keeps listing notes from many, many countries. I've reached out to them on a item, hopefully we can work a deal. I might put together a wish list and see what they can do.  monalisa-money-mondo ,They deal almost exclusively on ebay but do have a website you can go through as well.

I find myself in a similar position in that there has been quite a few fantastic Latin American notes appear on Ebay recently which have attracted very high bids, about 3 or 4x what I would have expected as a top estimate. Although at >100 years old there probably can't be many more at that quality in existence and some buyers are digging very deep just in case they are the only examples at that level. I just tell myself there must be more and they will be better value next time :roflmao:

It's never easy to watch a great note pass by but the note will resurface eventually, or another will come up. The big questions are when? and will I live long enough to see the note again? lol

It still amazes me, unlike for coins, that it is relatively easy to find unrecorded dates, varieties etc for banknotes

Agreed! It's part of what makes banknote collecting so fun and frustrating at the same time. lol I don't know if I was a lack of caring about varieties in the past or just poor documentation, probably both, or whatever the reasons, but there are tons and tons of notes to be discovered yet. At least notes that do not have the proper or correct representation in the corresponding catalogs. I wonder if PMG is any closer to working out a deal for control of the P#'s, or working a deal with TBB?

On 6/26/2023 at 4:44 PM, ColonialCoinsUK said:

I would think they are uniface 'proofs' although 'colour trials' would not be unreasonable and PMG would be able to match colours or not.

They look good to me, the engraving and ink seem to be a match to other notes. Some were printed on plain white paper with no W.M. and others on thin yellow paper with no W.M.. There is no overprint on the face, third printing, and there are at least 4 different colors, blue, orange, brown and green. PMG didn't like the P83x, missing back printing, I sent in a while back and that makes me a little nervous.

Abkhazia - I had to look that one up! Nice note and appears to have lots of historical references that, at the moment I could only guess at xD

I like the note a lot, I just wish it didn't have that QR code printed on it. Not a fan of that, throws off the look of the note a bit. :preach:

  15. I checked with PMG this week and they threw me a lifeline in regards to creating separate P#'s for the 107A & B varieties, perforated and red overprint, but I'll have to select the "Variety" add-on service. That means I'll have to pay a few extra dollars but that also means if/when PMG does assign a new P# to one or both of the varieties it should be available to everyone going forward, and that future submitters shouldn't have to pay for the Variety add-on service. :wishluck: Having to pay for the "Variety" add-on is a small price to pay if new P#'s are assigned, especially since I feel like I snuck one in on my last submission, on which I listed a P#101r that didn't exist but which was eventually assigned to the notes by PMG.

I'm at the 50 yard line with this, next step is to send the notes in. Updates as they become available.....
