Where have all the (Ukrainian banknotes) gone.?

Where'd they go? Oooh I know, in Bonezdog registry set! JK xD

But seriously this is a good problem to have. I keep an eye on the population reports and Ukrainian banknotes have been making big strides. While the pace has slowed in recent weeks I fully expect a large increase in the near future, an expectation such as that wouldn't exist without multiple collectors out there acquiring these graded notes, it's a simple matter of supply and demand. With out the demand it would be just me sending in only the notes I needed or deemed worthy for grading and greedily hiding them away in my collection/s. Having multiple dedicated collectors looking for notes really helps to shake them loose from collections and sellers. Not just common notes but also higher quality notes and harder to find notes. In the last month I've watched two P #50's go up for auction, a note that is not often seen, multiple specimens became available along with unissued notes and quite a few of the early Pick #'s have started popping up. All good things. As far as my roll in this I hope to convince PMG to add some short sets to the Ukrainian registry, right now they only have two short sets along with two large sets comprising over 100 notes. A 100+ note set is a daunting task to take on, and typically contains a few unattainable notes for the average collector. I feel if a few short sets could be added (specifically for the modern Hryven issues) that would draw in even more collectors. Hopefully, if more collectors gravitate towards Ukrainian banknotes even more great notes will become available, I have a feeling they will. So Bonezdog, Perfect-70 and all you other Ukrainian banknote collectors out there, bring it on! I love seeing new collectors and especially passionate ones and you can bet your last dollar that I will be there when the last Ukrainian note is gone.:wishluck:

Here's some of my latest additions, I got a really good offer/deal from one of the sellers of some of these. An offer I couldn't refuse. I'm sure glad nobody else seems to be going after the earlier notes or specimens, more for me.

So... Please tell me you've gone full nerd and there's a spreadsheet and a chart / graph?

HA! Not yet, I've been to busy looking for the elusive skunk banknote.lol

In all seriousness, I'm working on it right now. I might have something cobbled together by Tuesday when they update the Pop Reports.

OK, here you go @Revenant

Increases were observed in the following categories

10 Hryven +1

20 Hryven +1

500 Hryven +1

100 Karbovantsiv +1

2,000 Karbovantsiv +1

5,000 Karbvantsiv +1

5 Karbowanez +1

10 Karbowanez +1

100 Karbowanez +1

Still not sure I can glean much from this, so we'll see if I have time before next week to expand the spreadsheet by Pick #.

Well, in fairness I was talkin about your overall pop numbers, not doing it by pick number, that sounds like a lot of work. lol

Too late, I'm on a mission now.

I went through the entire SWC (Modern Issues) and I was skunked on the skunks. It wasn't a fruitless effort though, I found lots of notes for my themed signature set. I haven't given up on the skunks yet but it's looking grim.

Ok, shame on me for not going through the Pop Report because the number graded didn't change. Because of that I'm missing some data that could have changed even though the number graded didn't such as equal amounts of subtractions and additions.

Here are the changes based on today's Pop Report and the Report from 5/18. It's kind of interesting.

2 Hryven + 1

10 Hryven + 1

100 Hryven +2

200 Hryven +1

500 Hryven +1

1000 Karbovantsiv +1

2 Karbowanez -1

10 Karbowanez +1

20 Karbowanez +3

50 Karbowanez +1

100 Karbowanez +1

30 Shahiv +1 (New Line)

As you see my totals don't match the PMG week over week, I have a + 13 and Pop Report shows a +12, so the only thing I can think of is something happened last week that I didn't track or a data entry error on my end. hm I'll have to be more vigilant with this. The addition of a new denomination is not that surprising but the subtraction from the 2 Karbowanez note is very interesting to me, as that is the biggest $ Ukrainian note there is. I've changed my spreadsheet format a little bit and we'll see how it goes from here.

This is also the first time in the three weeks of more closely tracking that there was an increase of more than 1 in a denomination, the 20 Karbowanez notes saw a +3 this week and the Karbowanez denomination as a whole saw the most activity. The Karbowanez was the currency issued during Nazi Germany's occupation of Ukraine in WWII.

The +2 increases give me some hope that a few Shahiv stamps will be going up for sale in the near future, we'll see, the +1 increases have me scratching my head a bit if all these notes were on a single submission. I tend to think the Shahiv were one submission and all the others were on a separate on from a different person. The Shahiv are a different animal compared to the other notes that saw an increase.

Probably the most interesting thing to me, so far, is the corrections. Two corrections in the last 4 weeks. The WWII issues and the Hryven denominations are seeing the most increases.

Well the 10 & 100 Hryven notes have been seeing the most activity with increases in 4 of 9 weeks since I started tracking. I'm thinking I'll try and do a comprehensive breakdown at 10 weeks next Tuesday and see if glean anything from these numbers.

The 100 Karbowanez has seen the most consistent activity with five weekly increases, albeit only a +1 increase each time.

OK, so I think tracking the population report is about to pay off. There is some things going on right now and I'm pretty sure I have a good grasp of the situation because I've been monitoring and logging the population reports. More to come as info becomes available, it may take 3 - 4 weeks to shake out.

I think I can safely conclude that the four notes are all early twentieth century notes. Tracking the population report is proving fruitful, knowing what the sellers are holding in their hands is very useful in determining my strategies.

I always get excited when I see the Karbowanez denominations increase, I would love to finish out that series one day. I have a feeling that all the notes graded are pre 1945 issues and I'm pretty sure I know who submitted the three 1,000 Karbovantsiv banknotes.

Even though there was not an increase in population this week, there was a change made to the population report. There was a denomination listed as "3" , that's it just 3, this denomination was removed from the population report and presumably merged into the 1 Hryvnia denomination total which saw an increase of +1 from the prior week. I totally agree with getting rid of the "3" denomination and putting it where it belongs. :golfclap:

I've noticed a slowing of new graded notes on the marketplace for several weeks now and sales have definitely dropped off. Now, all that's left are the typical low grade modern notes that no one wants and the ridiculously overpriced. I knew this ride would be over soon and to complete my Ukrainian sets I would have to self submit the remaining notes but I was hoping it would continue for a little longer.

Ok, one each of the Karbowanez series makes sense if you were a collector or selling but having (10) Karbovanets and (28) 500 Hryven notes graded doesn't, there's just not that many collectors out there to justify having those notes graded in large quantities, and since none of them appeared to have graded very high (nothing above 68 and very few at that level) I think this seller will have a difficult time selling these.

Interesting......

Since I started tracking these on December 30th, the population has gone from 1,821 to 2,427 a 606 note increase. Pretty impressive, since PMG had only been averaging 121 Ukrainian notes per year prior to 2021 and if I take away the 2020 totals I'd bet the average would be much lower. I think it's safe to say the the number of Ukrainian notes graded by PMG has doubled since I started collecting these in late 2018 early 2019.
