Fantastic and invaluable information as usual
It would be great if catalogues could also include UV images of notes.
A similar thing happens with the El Salvador 1983 5 colones (Pick134) where the serial number in Series BJ-BZ fluoresces green under UV light whereas for Series HA-UA the serial number does not! I don't have the UV images How do you scan notes easily at home to get the images????

I think your scans turned out great, the Russian 1 ruble note that says 1898 on it would have been printed between 1912- 1917 as it is the P#1d with Shipov signature, I'm unsure who's signature is the second though sorry. The other vertical note is P#11c with Shipovs name again but I don't know the other name.
Hopefully this is somewhat helpful and maybe someone else will chime in as well.
I mainly collect Czechoslovakia banknotes but I have others as well.
I look forward to seeing more posts from you in the future.

Great notes and information as always!
I was starting to look at more modern specimen notes for my collection as there are surprising few graded examples out there - now your posts have forced me into it

Thanks! I was hoping for a little better grades than the 64 & 65 two of the specimens received but those grades were not outside of the range I thought they were in.
For these series notes technically no, but they did perforate "SPECIMEN" into several proofs, color trials and unissued notes. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't believe Ukraine has ever had an issued note with specimens that were perforated.
Fortunately there are several pretty good references on these, unfortunately none of the references contains all of the information as a whole and some information is just not documented at all. I have yet to come across any printing figures for Ukrainian specimens, so I couldn't give you an actual number of how many of each were printed. As far as availability, from my perspective, notes from the first series are the hardest to find followed by the fourth, second and third series. There are some harder to find varieties within each series, but in general that's how they seem to rank.
The first series specimens from 1991 only have red overprint specimens but if you were to include proofs and color trials this becomes the series with the most varieties, several were perforated "SPECIMEN" by I.S.B. (Imprimerie Special de Banque). For each issued note in the first series (7 notes total) there are known proofs with "SPECIMEN" perforated just above the numeric denomination on the face. There are also several unissued coupons/denominations with "SPECIMEN" perforated in the same location, if someone was to include the proofs, unissued notes and color trials in their collecting goals they would be looking at 40 notes total for just the first series. Unissued denomination below, a proof, with "SPECIMEN" perforated above the denomination.

The second series, printed by T.D.L.R. (Thomas de la Rue), has fewer notes and only specimens with red overprint, but, again, if you start including proofs and color trials that number jumps up and more than doubles the number of notes with "SPECIMEN" on them. Color trials below.

The third and fourth series, printed by T.D.L.R. and the N.B.U. (National Bank of Ukraine), have the most specimens in terms of shear number of denominations and variations/varieties. The most common varieties are simple date changes on the notes when more were printed and prefix changes, going from a fractional to alphabetical (fractional prefix notes printed by T.D.L.R., alphabetical prefix notes printed by the N.B.U). There are some proofs known for the third and fourth series but not nearly as many as the others and no color trials that I am aware of.
    Proof

Date and prefix change within series/denomination.

If you are counting only legitimate specimens from these series you are looking at a 30 note collection, if you include the variation/varieties, a type set would be 20. If you included proofs and color trials then you'd probably be looking at around 70 notes! The possibility of someone actually being able to assemble a set like that is pretty much zero though, the notes just aren't available or don't exist and the financial aspect of it would only make it possible for a select few. I'll stick to drooling over pictures.
I also suspect that there could be even more variations not listed in any of the references but have not found the notes to prove it yet. The odds are low of me ever finding these, or that they were even printed, but if I do discover them you'll hear it here first.

That is a nice group of specimens you have, and I'm glad that they graded nicely.  Do you have any idea how many of the different specimens were produced for each different type, or is there anywhere where it is documented. Did Ukraine ever use regular issued bills as specimens like other countries did, where they would just punch out the word specimen. It's very interesting to see specimens from other countries that don't come up for sale as often. Great post!

I agree as I find the design interesting and this is often best seen on Specimens - they do tend to put holes in them and SPECIMEN (or the equivalent) in big red letters on top which often distracts Remainders are a great compromise.
Apparently the records for the 500 pesos note have 200 printed but 197 incinerated so maybe just 3 issued notes escaped Hoping one turns up at a local UK auction

I've been surprised that they've essentially remained open and uninterrupted this entire time, especially in the beginning when Russian troops were on the outskirts of Kyiv. There were some issues early on with cash availability, exchanges and so on, but for the most part the NBU seems to have done an admirable job in doing what needs to be done.

That's a big negative!  The 500 pesos is a real looker but with such a low printing (I read 200?), it would probably be out of my budget.
It's always interesting to me that a great looking specimen, remainder, etc. can often be many multiples less than a really ratty note that was issued/circulated. I understand the attraction and the premium attached with a circulated note of this type and similar notes, but am more often than not pretty content with my specimen, remainder, etc. It's all about the looks with some people.

The authentic notes have the stamp like overprint as well and it is the only note in the first series that used the stamp overprint all the other notes from that time had adhesive stamps. The adhesive stamp notes are cool as well, I have a couple so far. They can be hard to find in decent condition but like this note I'm not sure if they were stamping uncirculated notes or any notes they could get their hands on. The adhesive stamp notes have some counterfeits as well but i don't have any.. The multiple stamps are all the same as far as I can tell. I'm not sure why it was stamped multiple times.

Or varieties vs errors.  Or acceptable variation/tolerance vs errors vs varieties vs counterfeits in a steel cage match, Thunderdome even.
    # 2 is is lightly inked, much lighter when compared to the others, and I believe this resulted in some detail loss, especially on the front and possibly on the back making the X seem smaller or "weaker" to use coin terminology. It could also be variation in the engravings but when considering the note as a whole it just has the overall quality in the engraving and inking that I would expect, even though it may not be on par with other notes. Excellent point about the flowers around the horns on notes 4 and 6, again my opinion is that what you are seeing is an inking variation between the notes, #6 seems to have less ink applied than #4 (#4 is the most heavily inked of the three that I believe are authentic) making the detail in the flowers look "weaker" or sloppy. In the same context over inking could obscure some details, especially in the anticounterfeiting grid. A few of those small squares could get filled with ink, or the lines get thicker distorting the grid. The same would go for the detail in the flowers.  I suppose the inking variations that I think we're all seeing could be do to how the paper contacted the plate or how much force was applied as well.
Great observations and points everyone! An excellent discussion so far!

Interesting - I had discounted Option 2 due to the X and I thought 6 was genuine due to the b rather than option 4. Although I thought the flowers between and above the horns in the bottom right corner were better in Option 4
Counterfeits vs varieties - the ultimate question!

So I remembered your previous post about these and how they did the grid kind of haphazardly on the fakes and so my initial guess not reading was that 4, and 6 were real the rest were counterfeit. After reading I believe that 4 is fake as well based on the font on the back and that 6 is the only real one. I really like these posts!

There are a few more Ukrainian 70* notes ending today, one is a stunner but not in the budget at the moment. Congrats to whomever wins this note, it's amazing, and I hope to see it in someone's registry set soon.

ah yes it’s interesting to see notes that had used the stock images available! I have seen quite a few different ones now!

that one is quite unique that apart from the cow the same Columbus portrait was also used on the 1910 pesos issue! 😁

That wouldn't surprise me - it would seem to be a generational undertaking! It is certainly the case for Napoleonic coins and medals housed in old European collections.
Great example, issued notes seem to be a real challenge - I've got the cow though

Yes definitely that’s what it’s all about! I started this hobby as a kid and have been collecting on and off ever since…I have sold and traded a little bit but it’s never been about the investment or making money.
and yes they are awesome notes! Hopefully my friend one day will let me buy one or two of them 😅😂

I am 100% with you in that it's all about the notes/hobby and having something unique to pass on to the next generation. The money only matters when I can't afford a note and have to pass.
Beautiful notes by the way, I love those solid #'s!

haha definitely Mike you need to join the “70 club”
and yes it’s a shame what has happened in Nicaragua, I am hoping at some stage it will bounce back like it did in the 90s.
also like your idea about building some custom sets. I’ll have to get on it and let you know! My Nica friend had also sourced some excellent solid serial #s but he wouldn’t part with them. They are really hard to source in Nicaragua due to generally only having one prefix per issue. So you are limited to a possible max of 9 per note! I’ve add some photos!
I also understand what has happened now with the Ukrainian notes with the additional interest in the new releases and high grades which everyone loves to have as part of the collection! Hope you can take advantage of some of the rarer pieces that come to light!
And well I understand that many people also use high quality notes as investments, but for me it’s about the hobby collecting and hopefully passing on this legacy to my kids. For that reason I’m not afraid of any price drops and I would see that as a great buying opportunity 😁
