Yesterday, August 9th, 2024, the National Bank of Ukraine announced that new 1000 & 500 Hryven banknotes had been released into circulation. The banknotes will bear the signature of the current Chairman of the NBU, Andrii Pyshnyi, the year of issue, 2024, and a new addition, the slogan of modern Ukraine, СЛАВА УКРАЇНІ! / ГЕРОЯМ СЛАВА! (GLORY TO UKRAINE! / GLORY TO HEROES!), on the back. The slogan will be added to all denominations of banknotes going forward with a release date of August 23, 2024 announced for the 50 Hryven banknotes after which will follow releases for the 20, 100, & 200 banknotes, release dates to be announced for the last three denominations but it doesn't seem that those will be issued until 2025. No 50 UAH banknotes currently in circulation have Pyshnyi's signature, not counting a commemorative 50 UAH note that was released earlier this year with a limited printing, and there are also no circulating 200 UAH banknotes with his signature. There have not been new varieties of either note since 2021, save some commemorative issues.

I expect that, for the 1000UAH banknotes, the new Pick # will be A128d and that all other Pick numbers for current Ukrainian notes will follow suite in using the next variety letter under the current base number. That is of course unless the powers that be determine otherwise, it would not surprise me in the least if a completely new Pick # was assigned for all denominations going forward with the slogan added. This is the second variety for the 1000 Hyrven that will have Pyshnyi's signature, a previous print run having been done in 2023 shortly after he took office, and the fifth overall for notes of the current design which includes one commemorative issue.

As previously mentioned, 500 UAH notes were also released into circulation on August 8th, with the 1000UAH notes. I expect that the new 500 UAH notes will be assigned Pick # 127e, again unless the powers that be decide to go with a completely new number, they will be the seventh type of this design which includes two commemorative versions.

The 1000 & 500 UAH notes are available now from online sellers, and have a combined face value of $36.45 USD. The new notes are considered regular issue notes and will most likely be printed in the millions, making them readily available for those who are interested.

I see that PMG has added slots for these notes to some of the Ukrainian registry sets already (it's fantastic that they were added so quickly) and it looks like they are assigning them completely new P#'s which is lame. Now they just need to get the rest of the previously issued Pyshnyi notes added. .

I also see that the Banknote Book is assigning these new #'s and calling them commemoratives as well. Also lame.

The NBU did say that they are adding the slogan to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's independence but unlike previous commemorative notes these are being printed strictly for circulation and not as collectors items. Although it is not stated in the NBU's press release it is possible that the slogan will remain on future printings of banknotes, but that remains to be seen. I suppose a completely new # is not out of line, I just would have personally preferred that these be listed as a variety.

On a separate note is PMG getting closer to transitioning cataloging from Pick #'s to Banknote Book #'s?
