Series Question

10 posts in this topic

Are you talking about the Hawaii and North Africa emergency notes or just in general? For Hawaii they were series 1934, 1934A, and 1935A, for North Africa they were series 1934, 1934A and 1935A

No, there were none. All series were dated 1935 (plus letter) for $1 silver certs, 1934 (plus letter) for FRNs and larger denomination silver certs and legal tenders. The next series after the war was 1957 for $1 silver certs, 1950 for FRNs and 1953 for US notes and larger denomination silver certs. During the war, the series year never changed, but letters were added ($1 silver certs went all the way to series 1935 H).

Well, the Treasurer throughout the war was William Alexander Julian and the Secretary of Treasury was Henry Morganthau Jr. for all but the last few weeks of the war when Fred M. Vinson took over. So taking those three into account, series 1935, 1935 A and 1935 B $1 silver certs were issued during the war.

Secretaries of the Treasury between 1939 and 1945

Henry Morgenthau Jr 1/34-7/45

Fred M Vinson 7/45-6/46

Treasurers between 1939 and 1945

W A Julian 6/1933-6/1949

So series used during that period would be

$1

Silver certificate 1935-A, 1935-B (questionable)

$2

Legal Tenders 1928-C (maybe), 1928-D, 1928-E (questionable)

$5

Silver certificates 1934, 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

Legal tenders 1928-B (maybe), 1928-C, 1928-D (?)

FRN 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

$10

Silver 1934, 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

$20

FRN 1934, 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

$50

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

$100

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A, 1934-B (?)

$500

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A

$1000

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A

$5,000

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A

$10,000

FRN 1934 (maybe), 1934-A

The issues listed as (maybe) are because they were issued beginning around 1934 and I don't know the exact date when the series letter was changed. The questionable or (?) ar because since Vinson came into office in mid 1945 they may not have had time to create the new plates and begin printing before the end of the year.

The problem with a question like this is that it is almost impossible to find anything that references when a given series went into production. I'm sure some of the paper money experts have a references that covers it but I don't.
