Anyone Know what the designations on Obsolete state notes mean?

Here's a tough one. I recently graded a whole bunch of Obsolete southern state notes from the Civil war era. Just before the serial number there is a designation. For example on the Alabama notes it reads " ALCR11" or ALCR4" or ALCR4A". North Carolina notes read "NCCR148" or NCCR55"

 

I gather the first 2 letters are the state but what does the rest mean? Thanks

I'm going to order the new book called Southern States Currency by Hugh Schull with assistance from Wendell Wolka. That'd be the only place I'd know of to find out.

The CR designation refers to the Criswell number. Grover Criswell was a currency dealer and past ANA president who specialized in Confederate currency and wrote the authoritative reference book on this area.
