The plot develops quickly and at a good pace. The novel is a steampunk fantasy filled with romance and political intrigue. The novel combines gothic romance with steampunk. It has political intrigue, a spirit of fairy tale and metaphors relating to real issues. It is reminiscent of something between Frankenstein and Faun's Labyrinth. It may also remind some readers of Tool and Hayao Miyazaki's frame-by-frame music videos. "The Alchemy of Stone is highly recommended for those who like interesting and relevant stories.
