Here is a 1905 $20 gold certificate Fr. 1180 PMG 65, 'Technicolor Note' with comments exceptional paper quality, great embossing.
This note comes from a small hoard of high-grade examples that William Philpot,  Secretary of the Texas Bankers Association and a currency collector and dealer, bought from a friend who had worked at the Treasury Department. There were originally 25 notes in the group that were not consecutive, but all came from the pack that began A4043___.  That pack is the source of most uncirculated examples.


Technicolor is a color motion picture process invented in 1916 and then improved over several decades. It was a widely used color process in Hollywood from 1922 to 1952.

Technicolor became known and celebrated for its saturated levels of color, which helped create the larger than life feel of revered musicals such as The Wizard of Oz and Singin' in the Rain.

Thus its no surprise how this  note earned its nickname. Its dazzling array of golden colors seem to saturate and jump off the page. Its dark colors contrast perfectly with gold. The red seal and serial add the final piece of harmony.

 The etching and artistry are perfectly balanced, and its fitting that the central portrait would be none other than George Washington.

 Numismatically leaving nothing to be desired its easy to see how this note has ubiquitous appeal to both the collector and non-collector alike.
