MPC Initials question

I have a question for anyone who may know if there was a process of initialling over the serial numbers of MPC's as they were cancelled out or for any other reason. I was asked by someone who has several examples where someone wrote their initials on top of the serials.

 

Second, would it be worth trying to conserve it?
