Newby question re: catalog #

2 posts in this topic

Pardon the rookie question but I am looking at the PMG website population report and I don’t understand the “catalog #” reference in the very first column. Nationals start at 380. What does this number references and where I can find the catalog list? Also, I am assuming the catalog number references all note regardless of bank for that denomination and issue. Correct?

Appreciate any help.

The catalog number is what is referred to as the Friedberg Number. This number is taken from Paper Money of the United States by Arthur L. and Ira S. Friedberg. It is a comprehensive catalog of U.S. currency. It is the main catalog that all U.S. dealers and collectors refer to, and we base our numbering system off of it as well. Here is a link.
