I am very new to collecting coins and have a lot of questions.

I have had an interest in coins/stamps since my first JR stamp collection set and have just recently began to pursue this interest. I would like information on topics such as; " how to determine when a coin is worth getting graded, considering the cost of the service vs the value of the coin.

I have picked up quite a few gems of wisdom just reading the message posts and I appreciate the e-bay advice it saved me some dollars last evening as I usually go by the sellers percentages of overall satisfaction and do not read the actual comments.I have interests in silver dollars and pennies and I have thus far not purchased anything worth the costs I paid for it so I guess I am a sucker, but I guess most of us where at one point or another.

I logged on. just as I thought I normally did. There was suddenly no collection. I could envision all that work GONE!!!

I started looking for software to manage the collection. That was quite an experience. I would advise against it. Ask someone if you feel you need it. That someone should have a LOT of experience !!! After a couple of hours of searching, and a note to NGC ( they cannot be reached after hours ) I decided to try one more time with a different email and password. Who would believe it? It worked. Wonders never cease....

I love to collect a little bit of everything, bottom line , I live collecting and over the years I've developed a pretty big and valuable coin and currency collection

I've been concentrating mostly on my Confederate States of America currency collection. I've got one of each denomination $0.50-$500 notes, all in EF-UC, and I'm trying to collect all the different prints of each denomination all in good the same condition to put together a complete set of every note from 1861-1864 and have one of the best collections. I've got around 30 different notes but my collection is slow going because of my desire for only the best quality which as all know is expensive but I will continue till complete.

I'm also trying to complete the Australian Chinese Calandar Lunar Series II Year of the Dragon. I have all but three or four coins. I like low Mintage collections due to the higher value increase.

I have the complete BU Silver Eagle set and also the complete OGP Proof Silver Eagles complete with all Burnished OGP's. The Graded set I want to collect all the PF70 Graded Proof coins which I have a lot of already and one of my prize Eagles the 2008W Rev. of 2007, MS70 I won for $510. about a year ago.

I completed my BU & Proof IKE Silver Dollar collection in a Dansco Albumn , also in the Graded version.

Completed Susan B. Anthony set including the 1981 type II

    2010 5 oz Quarters set MS69, 2011-2012 BU sets

    Morgan Dollars I have a lot of including an 1889CC AU58, GSA set of 1880CC MS64, 1881CC MS64, 1882CC MS63, 1883CC MS65, 1884CC MS63,1885CC MS64

    1878CC MS62, 1879CC VF20, 1891CC MS65, also a 1891CC VF20 and an 1890P MS65. I've got lbs of Morgans and half I haven't been through those were just some of my better graded ones.

    Still finding Buffalo Nickels.

My budget for my collection consists of buying $10 of rolled coins each week. This week I bought 5 rolls of nickels. In the third roll I found a 1927. Very clear date. Possibly a VG-8.

Do the administrators ever look at the many sets of notes and adjust the scores accordingly???????

I was just wondering why I never see a score adjustment in the note sets like they do with the coin sets. I know that since I started assembling the few sets I have nothing has ever changed except the price to obtain quality notes. SSSSSSo whats up???

You have no doubt, regardless of generation, heard the term 'A Man's Word and a Handshake'. It is usually used in conjunction with how lawyers have contributed greatly to the problems in America.

Well some of us still believe in that old adage and practice it in an ongoing and unspoken philosophy relied upon daily. Not just a Man but an Adult. When a person gives his/her word and agrees to certain terms in an open forum and then avoids your attempts to contact for the follow up it is apparent that they do not prescribe to that same philosophy. When they eventually do respond with a 'Dog ate my homework' type of childish excuse for changing their minds, selling to someone else, or any other motivation it is nothing short of extremely insulting.

I would challenge everyone to adopt and follow through with the a fore described philosophy; one that was the basis for creating a nation with strong social expectations and to the ordinarily raised person with high moral character, just plain common sense.

If you want to be childish and change your mind then please at least resolve to be Man enough to tell the truth and not practice the art of avoidance.

    High hopes!

I have been purchasing more and more items from the BEP. My most recent purchases have been the limited edition collector's sets. I am hoping that as they sell out that the value increases. I just purchased the 1999 $10.00 Federal Reserve set limited to 2000 total availability. Anyone have any feedback for me? Let me know!

It is not just a hobby to spend ones free time on. Now coin, currency and comic collecting has become quite a profitable way of life for many professional collectors. It doesn't matter what you like to collect it can be any of the three listed above. If one knows what he or she is doing it is not only hobby, it could actually turn into a very profitable home business.

I started collecting things when I was only eight years old. I remember it started ever since my father gave me a bright shinny Morgan Silver Dollar. I have never seen one before that so I was completely dazzled by the luster that the spinning coin projected as the sun light hit coin while I was moving it up and down to observe the different effect that I could come up with the shiny Morgan Silver Dollar. This was the begging of my Collecting hobby. I practically collected everything that I thought was beautiful. And I saw beauty in almost everything that I can see. Then as my collection grew because I was simply enjoying everything that I have collected from coins to currencies, from marbles to rubber bands and of course trading cards. To me they all have theirs own distinct personalities. But why do we collect things is it because we are afraid that they would run out if we didn't have enough of them? If one is good then maybe have ten or twenty of them is even better. So when does it end? When do we say we say to ourselves there I have collected my very last piece of coin. I am done with coin collecting, but we know that it couldn't be that easy. We know that sooner of latter we won't be able to stop collecting things, simply because deep down inside us we really know why or who we are collecting for. You see it's like whenever a child get to see some of my coins, currency and specially my comic books collection, I see it in their eyes that they were thanking me for collecting these wonderful things that the child was feasting their eyes on. That's when I totally realize that I wasn't really collecting for myself or for my home business. That is when it finally hit me, that I was actually collecting for the children of the future. So that they too would someday be able to gaze their eyes on that same beautiful coin luster of that very first Morgan Dollar that was given to me when I was also just a child.

What would a complete set be worth?

I am looking to put together a full set of all three denominations of the 1896 Education notes.

I am starting with the $1 note. I found a nice one on eBay at

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/180881940473?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

This is a raw note that looks to be in AU condition.

Is it worth doing the Buy it Now insteaad of the auctionas to not risk losing out on winning it?

Any recommendations on putting the $2 and $5 notes together and is there any added value of having them as a set???

    Thank You!

    and Found some star notes

    Hi All,

Just wandered over from the Numismatic forum with a question for you currency folks. I was digging through some of my old stuff and I found that I had purchased a sheet of 4 two dollar bills in a BEP folder each of which is a star note. Not sure when they were purchased but suspect sometime in the 1980's. Could these be worth anything much beyond their face value? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks and Happy Collecting

    Coin addiction.

I am 61 and it took 50 years to get started. I was widowed last year in July and I needed someting to do that could replace marrage and become a true companion. Since I was a little kid I was interested in coins; thier designs intrigued me and I could remember in 1959 when the new Lincoln penney came out and I was facinated at the statue of Lincoln depicted inside the memorial; I thought it amazing that such a tiny thing was "engraved" in such detail on that shiny brand new piece of copper. I tried collecting but spending was more fun at the time.

Years passed and it wasn't until the beginning of this year when I discovered ebay and some friends that were collecting. After some searching, studying, wasting some money and then introduced to coin certification that I decided that coin collecting was fun and I became engrossed and somewhat addicted to modern US Coins.

I got hooked and last month joined up. I am now a part of the Collectors Society and today I will enter the very serious beginnings of my Sacagewea dollar proofs and mint entries and watch them grow.

I have plans to build my display cases and the thought of filling the empty spaces with graded, encapsuled coins is exciting. Building the cases is a project that is exciting as well. To anyone who reads this I am FlakyJT. Have a good day.

It is time that we demand that our currency returns to a Gold and Silver Standard to finally stop our failing economy. Just as it was done at the founding of our National Currency which kept is strong until the coins and notes we collect lost their true meaning.

Today I was looking at a recently purchased 1928 Gold Certificate PMG 40. I was thinking about how that note at was time a hedge against the incredible inflation that has our United States currency has suffered. It was a piece a paper that was truly converted; to a piece of paper worth much more than the cost of paper that the note was printed on. It was even more than that it was a guarantee that the government could not print that note unless it possessed the twenty dollars in gold that it represented. This is not news to numismatist, or at least I hope it is not news to numismatist. That paper money that was in the form of gold or silver certificates was not money that is faith based.

I personally think faith when comes to my personal belief in God is a great thing. However, a U.S. Govement note that is based on faith to give value as money is a bad thing, and that is what we are exactly left with now. If you are person who thinks they do not know what it is like to have faith or know someone that claims that they do not know what faith is just produce a modern U.S. Federal Reserve Note if it's yourself or the person who claims to have no understanding of faith and ask them if the current Federal Reserve Note has any value. If they say it does then they are exercising faith, pure and simple.

For when the Twenty Dollar Gold Certificate was printed it was done so with the backing of twenty dollars of gold in the U.S. Treasury. The government could not just print money if it did not have the precious metal in reserve to back-up the note. For the possessor of that note could demand twenty dollars or gold in exchange for the note from the government. This form of currency backed by or made or precious metal has survived for thousands of years and was a strong hedge of inflation. Inflation did not climb several percent each year as it does now. Under the Gold Standard it moved in hundredth of a percent if went up at all or even went in reverse.

Our elected officials both and have done us a disservice by putting us on a faith based currency which in turn makes our entire economy based on faith. There have been several examples of faith based economies throughout history and everyone has or is in the process of fiscal oblivion and or failure. We are, whether you care to admit it or not in the very mists of a continuing failure of our current faith based economy. It is the reason why government bailouts and other attempts to stimulate our economy have failed. The citizenry and world have lost faith in the United States. For a while the Euro was doing well for a world that had lost faith in the U.S. economy and thought the European nations that backed up the Euro dollar were worthy of faith. It has come to the attention to the world and Europeans that they deceived each other and out right lied about the financial assets and liabilities of nations that joined and formed the Euro Bank. The truth has started to come out about the reality of financial status of the countries that back up the Euro is even more dismal than the situation in the U.S. and it will correct its self to the point that if the Euro ends up being worth 75% of the dollar would be unlikely; if the accusation of book cooking the countries using the Euro turn to, being allowed in played a type of pyramid scam and there is no one else left to kick in. I should not be surprising to see Euro either exchanged into a new weaker form or fail all together. Sad for Germans that have done so well and made the Deutsch Mark a very strong currency and makes the British look wise in not joining the club and keeping their own national currency.

The point of this all is simply this. A faith based currency is good for governments; it allows them to print money as fast as they can because the reality is it has as much true financial backing as Monopoly money. We must demand that our government place us back on the gold and silver standards. That will turn our economy and currency around and we will see an end to our continuing inflating money. It would stop it and keep the U.S. as the number one market in the world and also turn us back in to an economy that is based on all types of commerce not just the service and consumer economy we live with now. Write your congressman and senator and demand that we be put back on a precious metal standard. This action will save the middle class instead of seeing it get smaller and smaller since the last precious metal backing of the dollar was done away with in the early seventies. For those of you old enough to remember think about what your dollar could buy in 1970. If you are old enough to remember what a dollar could buy in 1932 the last year of the gold standard.

There is something horribly wrong that by leaving my money in a savings account and it will lose value due to small amount of interest paid will not outpace inflation. Moving us back to a currency backed by precious metal will certainly end that, stop the shrinking of the middle class and return those of us that do not get bail outs to a reasonable expectation of obtaining some wealth not just trying lose our wealth.
